Long serving Peden’s Hotel third grader Steve Tyne picked up the holy grail of bowling in the match against Greta/Branxton at Miller 2.
The seasoned veteran came on to bowl second change and claimed the hat-trick with the fourth, fifth and final deliveries of his fifth over. He finished with figures of 4-34 off 10.
After a year away from the top grade, a new-look Supporters Club made an early impression by upsetting last year’s grand finalists Bellbird by seven wickets at Carmichael Park.
Bellbird won the toss and elected to bat, but the loss of regular wickets prevented the home side from gaining any real momentum.
They were eventually bowled out in the 36th over for 114.
Jason Orr led the way at the top of the order with 40, with Matt Fairlie and Billy Orr (18 each) the only other pair to reach double figures.
Wickets for the Goannas were fairly evenly distributed between Tim Goldman (3-29 off 10), Nathan Stapleford (2-26 off 10), Troy Culley (2-12 off 5) and Jackson Redmond (2-19 off 4).
Supporters breezed to victory inside 24 overs in reply, losing just the three wickets.
Greg Brodie blasted 67, with Jackson Redmond completing a fine all-round game with 25. Mick Gates finished proceedings off in a flurry with an unbeaten 20.
Joey Barber was the pick of the Tiger attack with 2-32 off 4.3.
In another upset, Wine Country thrashed Greta/Branxton by 129 runs at Allandale.
Sent in to bat, the Wood Ducks got off to a flyer courtesy of former president Mark O’Hara who kept his purple patch of good form in recent years going with a finely made 70.
Opening partner and newly appointed association president Stephen Hedger easily surpassed his best score with a streaky unbeaten 95, unfortunately running out of overs to bring up his maiden century.
The home side completed their 40 overs with a healthy 231.
Greta/Branxton lost a wicket with the very first ball in reply and things went from bad to worse as they were all out for 102 inside 23 overs.
Barry Richards made 35 and Cliff Newling made an unbeaten 26, with Martin Shearer providing a little bit of resistance in the tail with 17.
Defending the healthy target, Wine Country new-ballers Trevor McNamara (4-45 off 6.3) and Rob Sidebottom (3-37 off 7) did the majority of the damage in what was a memorable win.
Defending premiers Mulbring got their premiership defence off on the right foot with what in the end looked like a comfortable four-wicket victory, however they did not get it all their own way against a dogged Peden’s Hotel outfit at East End.
Batting first Peden’s managed just 70 runs from the 21 overs that they occupied the crease, with Matt Capper (19) and Tom Lantry (19) the only batsmen to reach double figures.
Cameron Ross was the star with the ball bagging 7-16 off 5.5 and receiving good support from Tom Cremona who took 3-31 off 10.
The run chase started off very shakily for the Marlins, with their top four batsmen all back in the pavilion for single figures, however Mick Mascord (31) and man-of-match Ross (21) steadied the ship to guide their side to victory.
Ben Read (4-26 off 10) and Dale Johnston (2-16 off 10) bowled tidily for the home side, however the low target was always going to be hard to defend.
