The Kurri Kurri Community Festival was held in Rotary Park, and the drawcard act Brothers3 had fans from Broome in attendance.

An estimated crowd of about 2000 people enjoyed the festival, which also included performances by local country-folk singer Melody Pool; band, singers and dancers from local schools and dance schools; plus markets and a film screening.

Festival coordinator Carol Doherty said she was thrilled with the turnout and the weather, especially considering Friday’s downpour.

“We were blessed, we’re very pleased,” she said.

“There were people coming and going all day.

“The entertainment was fantastic, and the little ones from the schools were so excited.”

The festival was first held in 2011 in the lead-up to the opening of the Hunter Expressway, with the aim to create a similar atmosphere as the Kurri Kurri Civic Week celebrations of the 1970s.

Ms Doherty, who has led the festival organising committee since its inception, said she would be stepping down from her role.

“I’m so proud of my committee – everyone pulled their weight and brought something to the table,” she said.

“We have built it up and now I’m hoping someone will be able to take over.

“Without our committee, sponsors and volunteers, and everyone working together, the festival would not happen.”

The town’s 115^th birthday celebrations will continue this Friday night with a dinner dance will be held at Kurri Kurri Bowling Club.

Funds raised at the dinner dance will help the festival cover its costs.
