The park’s new name honours the outstanding dedication of the former Cessnock councillor Jeff Maybury, who died in July 2015 after a battle with cancer.
Affectionately known as the Mayor of Weston, Mr Maybury, 71, was Cessnock’s longest-serving councillor, with 35 years of loyal service.
Peace Park was one of his proudest achievements in his time on the council.
In addition to his commitment to council, Mr Maybury was also very active with the St Vincent de Paul Society, the Tidy Town movement and the Weston RSL Sub Branch.
In June 2016 he was named a Freeman of the City, which is the highest acclamation Cessnock City can bestow on its citizens.
The request to change the park’s name was submitted by the Weston RSL Sub Branch; Cessnock Council endorsed the name in August last year, writing to the Geographical Names Board for official approval, which was granted this year.
Mr Maybury’s family, friends and people who knew and valued him in the community gathered at the park on as Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent and Mr Maybury’s wife, Pat unveiled the new sign.
Cr Pynsent said this tribute is very deserving.
“Jeff dedicated much of his life to making our community a better place to live and was instrumental in the establishment and development of Peace Park, so this is truly fitting,” he said.
Mrs Maybury said her husband would be humbled and proud Peace Park has been renamed in his honour.
“For more than 25 years, Jeff worked hard to make Peace Park what it is today and I would like to thank all those who supported the renaming of the park,” she said.
“It would always give Jeff so much joy when he drove past and saw people using the park and I can only hope this continues.”
