The project involves two key components – the first stage is the access improvements and the second is the Bridges Hill Playground upgrade.
Work is taking place on Yango Street to improve access from the Cessnock CBD to Bridges Hill. This part of the project includes widening footpaths, installing new sandstone retaining walls and a building a concrete stairway that will continue on and provide access to Millfield Street in future stages.
This work is expected to be finished by Friday, April 27 (weather permitting).
The playground upgrade is due to start in June, and will include removing the existing playground and building a new bike track in its place; a new regional playground, which will include a toddler’s play area and new barbecue facilities; more sandstone walls and pathways to connect the bike track to the playground, and three fitness stations along the shared pathway.
Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said he is glad to see this fabulous project progressing as it will be a wonderful asset for the local community and visitors to the area.
“Upon completion, this area will be a regional hub, providing a creative and imaginative play space for people of all ages and abilities,” Cr Pynsent said.
“I strongly encourage anyone who hasn’t seen the concept design to jump online and check it out.”
This project is partly funded by the National Stronger Regions Fund and the Stronger Country Communities Fund. Cessnock City Council will continue to seek grant opportunities to help fund the later stages of the project.
