A renewed national focus on STEM in school education is critical to ensuring that all young Australians are equipped with the necessary STEM skills and knowledge that they will need to succeed in the workforce.
Cessnock High School is at the forefront of STEM education with its Cessnock Academy of STEM Excellence (CASE) program, an initiative of the Cessnock High School learning community and the NSW Department of Education.
The learning community includes Cessnock High School, Abermain, Cessnock, Cessnock East, Kearsley and Kitchener primary schools.
The main purpose of the CASE is to improve the expert knowledge of STEM for the teachers to engage them in future-focused learning and teaching practices, and to inspire a passion for STEM in students.
The NSW Department of Education has been very quick to support the CASE concept that was developed by the Cessnock High School Learning Community and has provided a grant to develop the program further so that it can potentially be implemented across regional and rural NSW.
As a combined celebration for National Science Week and Education Week the Cessnock Academy of STEM Excellence (CASE) is hosting two community focused events.
Drones in the Vines and ShowCASE which are designed to engage and inform the wider community about STEM.
Drones in the Vines
This event will highlight how drone technologies can be utilised in traditions field such as viticulture and farming. The family friendly event includes a free barbeque and mini drone flying experiences.
The UAVAIR team will provide a free seminar on drones and will have a flying demonstration of a commercial drone. This event starts at 11:00am and concludes at 2:00pm
Show CASE
Show CASE aims to highlight the amazing new technologies that are being introduced into our school system. There will be students completing STEM challenges, robotics and STEM displays with tours of the school’s new facilities.
Dr Scott Sleap, Deputy Principal STEM for the Cessnock High School Learning Community commented,
“Drones in the Vines and Show CASE are about highlighting the type of technologies and skills that will be essential for success in the new digital workforce.”
