Questions put forward by Cr. Morgan Campbell certainly point to this.
Cr. Campbell will move at tonight’s council meeting that the development of a strategy for a new Cessnock aquatic centre is provided for in the 2013/14 budget.
“It is time for council to make very clear that a new Cessnock Pool is a priority, and that we want to start the process of making it happen,” Cr. Campbell’s notice of motion states.
“Our aim is that by the 2016/17 budget such a project will be shovel ready. Many of the current councillors signed a pledge during the election campaign supporting such a facility which, if done properly, could bring major competitions and large numbers of people to the area, as well as making swimming more convenient for the large community of local residents who swim competitively, for fitness or for fun.”
At the November 21 council meeting, Cr. Campbell asked what land is available for a new Cessnock pool. An answer is expected at tonight’s meeting.
Prior to that, Cr. Campbell had sought information and an update on the current status of the Cessnock Pool strategy.
Cr. Campbell was told the draft consultancy brief for the Aquatic Needs Analysis Study has been prepared and is circulating among internal stakeholders as part of the consultation process prior to calling for quotes.
Discussion on replacing and relocating the ageing facility has been circulating for a number of years.
Sites suggested but not proceeded with include near the basketball centre, the PCYC grounds and opposite Cessnock Sportsground at South Cessnock.
