In April, Paxton Bowling Club called for expressions of interest from clubs seeking an amalgamation partnership to help address some challenging economic circumstances.
Cessnock Leagues Club responded to the call and negotiated a memorandum of understanding with Paxton Bowling Club.
Members of both clubs overwhelmingly voted in support of the amalgamation.
Cessnock Leagues Club CEO Paul Cousins said the merger was all about restoring the financial viability of a community asset.
“Members of both Cessnock Leagues Club and Paxton Bowling Club should feel confident that this partnership will deliver real benefits to both clubs,” Mr Cousins said.
Cessnock Leagues Club has committed to some initial improvements to Paxton Bowling Club’s facilities as well as the continuation of the club’s activities, including the bowling green.
“The preservation of Paxton Bowling Club’s identity is critical to the long-term success of this amalgamation,” Mr Cousins said.
“The retention of all Paxton Bowling Club staff and the establishment of a Paxton Bowling Club advisory committee highlight our commitment.”
Potential development opportunities will be considered at the Paxton Bowling Club site to further support the financial viability of the club into the future.
With formal approval required from state government authorities, the finalisation of the amalgamation is expected to take effect in early to mid-2016.
