Cessnock’s Corey Briffa has made a strong start to the Asia Dream Cup finishing 12th in his first test on grand prix-style circuits.
The 15-year-old, who is in year 10 at Saint Phillip’s Christian College in Cessnock, was selected in the series run by Honda which has races in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, India and Japan throughout the year.
Briffa’s mum Anne said it was a daunting debut for her son in Malaysia as he had predominantly raced road bikes on tighter and smaller go-kart circuits in Australia as he is too young to compete on the Australian road circuit.
“In Australia you have to be 16 to race or use circuits such as Sydney’s Eastern Creek, so opportunities to develop are limited,” Anne said.
“It was all very different for Corey with cameras in the pits and a lot of media attention as well as different style track.”
Briffa has been riding motorcycles since he was three and has won state titles and represented NSW in motocross. He tried a road bike for the first time last year.
