
Bears unlucky
Weston Bears midfielder Gary McDermott scored a treble in the Bears’ 3-all draw with Newcastle Jets Youth on Sunday.
Bears coach Trevor Morris said McDeromott was the stand out up front on a day when Weston made a lot of opportunities but were unable to convert them fully.
“A point from the first game is a good start, but I am a little disappointed as I think we should have won,” he said.
“They were given a penalty, which I don’t think was there and another of their goals resulted from a cruel ricochet for an own-goal by one of our defenders.”
The seniors head to Edgeworth on Friday night for Round 2 of the PS4 National Premier League.
In the under 22s the Bears had a 4-0 with Isaac Peek scoring a double and Nathan Stevens and Brad Millar also getting goals.
Weston’s U19’s lost 2-1 with Joel Barner the scorer for the Bears.
On Saturday the four Bears Youth team hosted Football Mid North Coast with the U17s, U15s and 13s all playing a 1 all draw. The U14s lost 2-0.
The youth teams head to Adamstown this Saturday.
Hawks win
Abermain Weston had a strong 36-16 win against Karuah Roos at Howe Park on Saturday.
The Hawks dominated for most of match with the Roos crossing with a couple late tries.
But the game was all over by then with the Hawks posting seven tries and four goals.
Ben Murray won the coaches award and man of the match with Shane Saunders awarded players’ player.
The win and good team effort put a smile on Mick Deacon’s face, but he said the team had to back it up at home next Saturday against the highly-fancied Carrington, who have won two out of two.
Bonus point
Cessnock went on a try scoring fest to defeat Eastern Districts 34-14 and claim a bonus point win.
Cessnock outclassed East in all aspects of the game to run in six tries to two. Points scorers were Lewis Carberry 2 tries, Soa Polutule 2 tries, Adam Flynn 1 try, Tane Clifford 1 try and 2 conversions.
Cessnock hosts Muswellbrook at Drain Oval, Cessnock, on Saturday in its first home game of the season. Kick off is 3pm.
Muswellbrook defeted Pokolbin 27-0 on Saturday to claim a bonus point win.
