The Basin carpark on Mount View Road has become a hot-spot for litter – but Mount View High School is hoping to change that.
The school has partnered with Cessnock Council and Hunter Councils in an effort to combat the litter problem.
A lot of students use the carpark and while it’s also patronised by the minor rugby league club and dog walkers, a council survey found many people blame the students for the rubbish.
School principal Desley Pfeffer said the project would encourage the students to develop a moral responsibility for helping in the community.
School captain Cameron Abbott agreed: “The community does a lot for our school, so it shouldn’t be a big deal for us to give back to the community,” he said.
Year 8 students and the school leaders took part in a clean-up on Friday morning (the last day of term three), with bags and gloves provided by Cessnock Council.
Two bright red wheelie bins – which have been decorated by students – will be installed in the carpark as part of the initiative.
