Police were called to a home on Murrays Run Road at Laguna, 50 kilometres south-west of Cessnock, about 10pm on Tuesday, responding to reports of shots being fired.

Officers from Central Hunter Local Area Command arrived to find a man inside the home, allegedly armed with a firearm.

A perimeter was established and specialist police were called to the scene to assist.

About 6.30am on Wednesday, a man was taken into police custody and a number of firearms secured.

A woman, who is believed to have been in the home, is assisting police.

There have been no reports of injuries.

Inquiries are continuing.
