Seven-year-old Katie Martin set out to collect 70 cans of non-perishable food for Foodbank, as part of her community service for her Promise Challenge badge.

She exceeded her target almost eight times over, with 547 cans donated in the six weeks up to May 15.

Members of the public dropped off cans at the scout hall and her school (Kurri Kurri Public School), and she held Katie held collection days at Aldi and Coles

“I was nervous at the beginning, but then I was happy when everyone was so nice bringing so many cans,” Katie said.

The Advertiser reported on Katie’s campaign in the first week of April.

Her mum Leanne said quite a few people brought the newspaper article along with their cans to the collection days at the local supermarkets.

“One lady even wanted a photo,” she said.

“It was very special.” 

Foodbank is the largest hunger relief organisation in Australia, distributing food to more than 560 charities, welfare organisations and community groups who support individuals and families in need.
