Cessnock Goannas premiership reunion a night for all

What started as a reunion for 1977 Cessnock premiership players has expanded to become a celebration for the ages.

The club is hoping that a member of the 1954 first grade premiership will join the celebrations at Cessnock Leagues Club on August 19.

Reunion spokesman David Woodbury said it had quickly become apparent that the 1977 reunion had struck a chord with the community.

Woodbury said the response was terrific and the night had been expanded to become a chance for everyone involved in the club over the ages to get together.

The Goannas won their first top grade premiership in 1941 and followed with first grade premierships in 1950, 1954, 1955, 1960, 1972, 1977 and 2003.

Cessnock also made the grand final in 1979-81, 1983, 1985, 1999, 2008-10, 2012 and 2014.

Woodbury said the club had managed to dig up a wealth of memorabilia from 1977 and was hoping that people would bring forward items from the era before and after, particularly from the premiership years.

He said surviving members of the 1977 premiership when Henry Tatana  booted Cessnock to a 21-17 victory against the Maitland Pumpkin Pickers, were coming from across Australia to take part.

It was a double celebration that day with Gary Johns, the father of Knights stars Andrew and Matt, leading the reserve team to a 17-15 win against Western Suburbs.

Tickets are $40, which includes a two-course meal, and can be purchased at the Cessnock Leagues Club.
