Last Saturday Thompson took out the $75,000 Cairns Cup on Chivadahlii the $1.60 favourite with another of his signature rides. Thompson stormed home to claim the cup, running away from the opposition.
The 6-year-old Nothin Leica Dane gelding is trained by James McConachy and just two weeks prior had claimed the Townsville Cup and now boasts prizemoney totalling $262,050 with eight wins and 12 minor placings from 30 starts.
Thompson has now ridden four Cairns Cup winners, including Seafight in 2013 and Richie Rocket in 2015.
Earlier on cup day Thompson steered We Just Love It to victory for trainer Janel Ryan and finished a close second on another Ryan-trained galloper Space Time.
Thompson was back home from Townsville to in time to ride Coffs Harbour Cup winner Darci’s Affair before setting off for Cairns.
