The Hunter’s first pride festival will officially take place in October this year.
Pokolbin Pride will be a five-day celebration of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people.
The event is being organised by Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen founders and partners Jimmy Wright and Matty Kerr.
So far the pair have announced that the festival will open on Thursday, October 20 and a closing barbecue will be held on Monday, October 24 with further details to be decided.
“Jimmy and I were on a camping trip recently and talking about all the festivals and events in the Hunter region and I commented that there should be one for ‘the gays’,” Mr Kerr said.
“This project is about creating something completely inclusive, informative, fun and accessible that represents the whole LGBTI community as part of the wider community.”

“Our vision is to create a festival of events and activities across the Pokolbin area that everyone can dip in and out of as they please; giving people the opportunity to explore and visit multiple venues over the five days,” Mr Wright added.
“There isn’t going to be a one big fenced off area with wristband access that costs hundreds of dollars to get into.”
Community interest has grown rapidly since the Pokolbin Pride Facebook page was created.
The page received more than 3000 likes in two weeks.
Mr Kerr and Mr Wright are inviting people to complete a survey about what they would like to see at the festival.
The survey asks people to tel them what the event should be about, what they like about the event concept, and what would make the experience perfect for them.”
The results will dictate what performers and sponsors they engage in a bid to create an event that people will thoroughly enjoy.
Public meetings have also been scheduled for local businesses, vineyards, restaurants, accommodation providers, charities and community groups, performers and volunteers.
The Sydney Pride Festival is on until June 30 and revolves around the theme Young Heroes.
The festivals give the community an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on gay and lesbian life.
