Team Pentessellate – comprising year 9 students Ben Galvin, Toby Astill-King, Harley Patterson, Martin Cathcart and Fei Fei Webster – were crowned overall champions at the competition in Sydney on October 25.
They followed in the footsteps of Mount View’s Revolution Racing, who were last year’s state champions and competed at the past three national finals.
F1 in Schools is the world's largest secondary school science, technology, education and maths (STEM) competition, with more than nine million students taking part each year.
Teams design and manufacture a miniature Formula One car to race down a 20-metre track, and are also judged on their specifications, engineering, portfolio, marketing and verbal presentation.
Pentessellate won the awards for best portfolio, best verbal presentation and best engineered car before being announced as overall NSW champions.
Supervising teacher Mark Bassett said the team was feeling proud of its achievements by the time the awards ceremony rolled around, but were still surprised to take home the overall crown.
“We were the only Pro Junior team so we expected to achieve a competitive result, even though our opposition were much older students with more experience at this level,” he said.
Pentessellate is seeking sponsorship for their trip to the Australian finals in Tasmania in March.
