This year the club made a special donation to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in memory of one of its much-loved members, Damien ‘Damo’ Wallace.
Well-known in Cessnock for his involvement in community events, Damien, 34, died in June 2016, after complications from surgery.
Social club secretary Ron Stothard said the club wanted to do something to honour Damien’s legacy, so they decided to make a donation to the ward where he had undergone treatment.
“Damien was a very good member of the club; he did a lot for lots of people,” he said.
Their donation allowed Ward 6E2 to buy two portable oxygen meters – one of which has been labelled ‘Damien’ and the other ‘Wallace’.
Social club members, along with Damien’s fiancee Elasea Gelderman said, officially presented the equipment to the hospital on November 23.
“He would be so happy to see something go back to the ward and the people who helped us so much,” Ms Gelderman said.
“To the 6E2 staff, past and present, a huge thank you for your hard work, skill, knowledge, kindness and care, always and again today. You honestly do save and change people's lives."
Other charities the social club has supported include Ronald McDonald House, the Cancer Council and the Mark Hughes Foundation.
