We’d already been talking with AGL about a far more realistic, competitive and more environmentally friendly plan which would also create more jobs and more sustainable jobs. Last Friday’s announcement confirmed AGL is prepared to make the necessary investment and its great news.  Even better, there will be no forced redundancies.

Extending Liddell was neither viable or smart. AGL’s plans for an upgrade at Bayswater Power Station, new gas-fired generation, pumped hydro generation, solar and battery storage makes much more sense.  

One aspect of Parliament’s decision to legislate for same-sex marriage which has received too little attention is the economic impact. Weddings and all the associated expenditure are expected to flow in large number and fast. 

That’s good news for the Hunter and other popular wedding destinations. Once home to our fabulous vineyards, wineries and cellar doors only, Hunter Wine Country and Broke Fordwich are home to great restaurants, wedding venues, chapels, concert venues, balloon rides, golf, craft breweries, distilleries and art displays. The diversity is magnificent.

The wedding industry extends to our hairdressers, beauty therapists, florist, hire cars, accommodation, marriage celebrants and more. The marriage equality-led economic boost will be a welcome one.

This is my last column for the year and I thank the Cessnock Advertiser for continuing to provide me with the opportunity to share my thoughts and information about what’s happening in Canberra.

I also thank all those who have done good work in our community throughout the year, particularly those who did so on a voluntary basis. We have blessed with great community spirit in the Hunter and I’m grateful for it.
