Josh Rogers, Jess Threlfo and Zane Richardson-Chasty are part of Wild Learning’s Friday film making and drama group for adults with intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
They have written, filmed and star in Travelling Through Books – the story of three friends who bump into each other at a library and become pulled inside the book into another dimension.
They have to travel from inside book to book until they can get back home.
The trio wrote the story so as to include the interests of each person – cars, cake making, animals and ghost stories.
The group met with Wild Learning creative facilitator Emmie Hallett once a week this term, and during each session they planned how they wanted each scene and section of the story to unfold, and then worked as a team to act, direct and film each other.
“The final film is about eight minutes long and each 'book' section of story is a slightly different style – often quite humorous – which allowed the group to try out different techniques and have some fun with their filming,” Ms Hallett said.
Travelling Through Books premiered at the Cessnock CWA rooms to a crowd of family, friends and community members.
“Wild Learning facilitates the Friday film making and drama group and we have been lucky to have some wonderful support workers assisting with the creative journey,” Ms Hallett said.
“The group would love to hear from adults with intellectual disability or ASD who would like to join us next year!”
Anyone interested in joining the group next year can contact Emmie on 0412 835 865.
