District 9670 Governor, Helen Ryan, is encouraging families to use the time over the summer break to plant a new tree in their garden.
“We realise how important trees are in curbing climate change by removing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air,” Mrs Ryan said.
”I think that if we can get local families from across Cessnock and Kurri Kurri on board with this project, then we can have a positive influence on the local fight against global warming.
“Over the last six months I have been overwhelmed with the response of local Rotarians to the project. Rotarians alone have planted hundreds of new trees in our district that will have a positive impact on ensuring we have a sustainable environment for future generations.”
Mrs Ryan hopes the support of the local community will ensure the Rotary Clubs of Cessnock, Kurri Kurri and Kurri Kurri Sunrise can achieve their goal and make a contribution to the fight against global warming.
The Cessnock club will be planting trees at Kitchener Poppethead Park, with support from the Hunter Valley Plant Market.
Pending council approval, the Kurri Kurri club hopes to plant at Margaret Johns Park and the Sunrise club has earmarked Rotary Park for its planting activity.
The project aims to have all new trees across Cessnock and Kurri Kurri planted by Earth Day on April 22.
