That’s what happened to a Cessnock couple last Sunday (January 7), when thieves ripped the air-conditioning unit from the bedroom window of their Hickey Street home.
The residents were not home at the time, and were informed about the incident by a neighbour, who had heard a commotion and saw a car drive away from the scene.
One of the occupants, Karen (who asked that only her first name be published) said it was a bizarre incident.
“The lady from the insurance company told me it was the first time she had ever heard of an air-conditioner being stolen out of the window,” she said.
Karen and her partner both have health issues, and the theft was another blow they did not need.
Despite Sunday’s heat, Karen said the worst thing was the fear of what they would find inside their home.
“There was a great big gap in the window; anyone could have gotten in there,” she said.
“I’m relieved nothing else was taken.”
