According to Weatherzone, the mercury is expected to reach 37 degrees in Cessnock on Friday, followed by tops of 38 and 37 on the weekend, and 40 on Monday.
After a hot start to January with an average of 33.7 degrees for the first 13 days, Cessnock residents experienced a few days of relief with relatively low maximum temperatures of 26 degrees on Sunday, 28 on Monday and 26 on Tuesday this week.
Despite the milder temperatures, there was no relief for the city’s firefighters, with small blazes reported at Congewai and East Cessnock.
Local crews also assisted at the large bushfire at Tomago over the weekend. That blaze, which had burned through more than 2000 hectares by Tuesday, caused the closure of Newcastle Airport.
