The Wollombi Valley community theatre company will present Dylan Thomas’s masterpiece Under Milk Wood at Laguna Hall from March 30 to April 7.
Written originally as a radio play in 1954, Under Milk Wood has been adapted over the years for both television and film (two films, in fact, the first featuring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor).
This Valley Artists production was conceived and adapted for the stage by Chris Davey and collaborator, director Janine Oliver.
Under Milk Wood is an affectionate and hilarious portrait of a day in the life of the small Welsh fishing village of Llareggub.
It explores the dreams and desires, loves and regrets of a host of unforgettable characters, such as blind Captain Cat, Mrs Organ Morgan, Lord Cut Glass, Nogood Boyo and Bessie Bighead.
The lyrical language, humour and characterisation of Under Milk Wood reflect the joys and despairs of age and youth and celebrate how beautiful and strange life can be.
The cast features some new faces that will surprise audiences, and some experienced hands that have trod the boards of the hall before.
The play contains 57 roles, which will be played by 15 actors (including one child) – a testament to Valley Artists’ professionalism.
Under Milk Wood opens at Laguna Hall on Friday, March 30 (Good Friday). Shows will be held on Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1, and from Wednesday, April 4 through to Saturday, April 7. All shows start at 8pm.
Tickets are available at valleyartists.org, Wollombi General Store and Great Northern Trading Post.
