The idea for the reunion was born after current members were reminiscing about the Alcan District Championships, which were held at the Kurri Kurri and Cessnock courts in 1990 and 1991.
More than 100 players from the Cessnock local government area took part each year.
Club stawart Col Andrews said the tournaments are fondly remembered, with many former players still talking about the five-set format.
Andrews was Cessnock District Tennis Association president at the time. He secured sponsorship for the event through Rod Doherty, who was then Alcan’s community relations officer.
Andrews said the early ‘90s was a great time to hold the championships, as it was during an era of 10 years of growth for tennis in the local area.
“It was very special – people still remember playing those five sets,” he said.
“It was a great success.”
Les Odd, who was the Kurri club president at the time, agreed.
“It put Kurri tennis back on the map,” he said.
All are welcome to come along to Saturday’s reunion to catch up with old friends, make new ones and have a hit on the courts.
The reunion will start at 4pm, with a sausage sizzle and drinks available for purchase.
A small fee of $5 will apply to cover costs, and those attending are encouraged to bring a chair.
