The scholarship is offered by Kurri Kurri Rotary Club in memory of long-serving club member and local electrician, Col Brown, who passed away in May 2016 after a decade-long battle with cancer.

The Rotary club established the scholarship last year, honouring Mr Brown’s tireless work in the community.

Luke McBride and Drew Dunlop-Daley were the inaugural winners, after the judges couldn’t split their decision.

Kurri Kurri Rotary president Paul Hughes said the club is proud to be offering the scholarship again.

“Col was a local legend known for his passion for the community, and always wanting to give a young person a fair go,” club president Paul Hughes said.

The scholarship is worth $2000 in total, comprising a $1000 tool voucher and a further $1000 cash given on completion of the recipient’s current trade year.

Applicants must be up to 25 years of age, live in the Cessnock local government area (but can work outside of the LGA), must be in their first or second year studying the electrical trade (residential or commercial – not industrial) and must be willing to complete their entire trade.

Applications must be submitted by June 8.
