In the 72 hours up to 9am Friday, 75.8mm of rain was recorded at the Cessnock Airport weather station.
Maitland received double that amount in the same time period, and similar totals were reported at Wallsend and Dungog.
The State Emergency Service received more than 500 requests for assistance across the Hunter Region on Wednesday.
The downpour was large enough to force the temporary closure of Old North Road, Rothbury and Lovedale Road at the viaduct – but both roads have now reopened.
However, all sporting fields in the Cessnock local government area are closed until further notice (check with your club for details).
The Harmony Day picnic at Peace Park, Weston on Friday has been cancelled due to the weather.
Light showers will continue on Friday, with a top of 25 degrees predicted.
The warm weather is set to return this weekend, with a top of 30 degrees expected on Saturday (partly cloudy, with the chance of a shower), and 33 degrees on Sunday (mostly sunny).
