Before long, people were snapping pictures of the storm clouds rolling in.
The lightning in particular provided a stunning sight for storm watchers.
It looks like the stormy weather will continue this weekend.
In Maitland, there is a medium chance of showers and the chance of a thunderstorm on Friday, most likely in the afternoon and evening.
Cessnock can expect a top of 26 degrees and a 60 per cent chance of showers later in the day.
The city’s weekend is forecast as cloudy, with a top 24 predicted for both days.
Maitland has a similar outlook.
There is a slight chance of a shower on Saturday, and a top of 24 degrees.
On Sunday, light winds and overnight temperatures falling to between 11 and 15 with daytime temperatures reaching the low to mid 20s are expected.
