Blue Warrior Fitness has launched Women’s Empowerment Seminars – two hour self defence classes teaching women how to protect themselves from an assault.
But the classes are more than just learning how to fight off an attacker. Attendees are taught the ABC’s – awareness, boundary setting and conflict resolution.
The idea is to resolve a potential clash verbally before using any sort of physicality.
“It’s always the ultimate goal to remove or resolve a conflict in a non-violent way,” Blue Warrior owner and head coach Nick Wyborn said.
“This gives women the strategies and confidence to use their voice as a tool.
“Then if those skills fail, instead of teaching 1000 ways to escape a grab, there are simple techniques to deter or prevent an attack.”
Mr Wyborn is a former police officer and trainer at the NSW Police Academy. He learned about the ‘Fast Defence’ class while he was in the United States and decided to start teaching it as he saw a need for it in the community.
“Women by nature can be vulnerable,” he said. “It’s important they possess these skills if they ever have to thwart off a conflict.”
The classes are progressive, Mr Wyborn said, and are run in a “crawl-walk-run” style for all different fitness and confidence levels.
The next Women’s Empowerment Seminar will run on Friday, June 15 from 5.30pm-7.30pm. The class is $25 per person.
