Congratulations to the Council crews working on the intersection of Maitland Road and Duffie Drive, Cessnock. Council staff were engaged by the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) to complete the project to provide better traffic flow for one of the key access roads to the centre of Cessnock.

The construction of the roundabout was very efficient and there was limited impact on road users. This was due to much of the works happening of a night.
It is pleasing to see the traffic flow already improving along this busy access road and the overall safety of roads users has significantly improved.
Additional works include drainage improvements, kerb and guttering, footpaths, cycleways and the installation of street lighting.
NAIDOC Week
Council has released a jam-packed program for NAIDOC Week 2018. The program runs from June 12 through to July 25 to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
We are encouraging everyone in the community to check out our program of events which include art workshops, family history workshops, Stolen by Jane Harrison (held yesterday at the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre) and the Barkuma’s NAIDOC Family Fun Day at Kurri Kurri.

Merv will be missed
Following the passing of Merv Mahon, on behalf of the people of the Cessnock local government area, Council acknowledges Merv’s contributions through the Retired Mineworkers Association, as the former state president, and as treasurer of Kurri Kurri Retired Mineworkers Association.
In particular we acknowledge the support Merv demonstrated to the Mayoral Academic Scholarships through the Cessnock and Kurri Kurri Retired Mineworkers Associations. Merv recognised our local youth need support in their education. His valuable contribution to our community will be sorely missed.
