The upgrades include construction of formal car parking, children’s crossing, drainage works, footpath, signs, line marking and kerb blisters to narrow down the crossing width for increased pedestrian safety.
The works were completed after the community expressed concern about the existing infrastructure.
Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said safety at schools is a priority, and council was very keen to carry out the upgrades.
“Councillor Darrin Gray raised the safety issues being experienced at the school. Councillors agreed something needed to be done sooner rather than later,” Cr Pynsent said.
“It is fantastic we have been able to improve the safety of the school community at Pelaw Main.
“The feedback has been very positive with the formalised parking, crossing and new signage making a big difference to not only pedestrians but drivers.”
Council reallocated funds from its 2017/18 bridges construction program to the 2017/18 traffic facilities program to fund the works, after it received additional grant funding for projects under the bridges construction program.
