Wollombi Road Providore is one of four finalists in the greengrocers’ service excellence category for the awards, which are run by Sydney Markets to recognise and encourage best practice and innovations in fresh produce and flower retailing and growing.
The awards are judged by industry experts as well as anonymous local mystery shoppers who visited the businesses over a six-month period.
Nominees were judged on areas such as store appearance, customer service, produce quality, range and freshness.
Wollombi Road Providore owner Michael Jenness said the business has a focus on fresh produce and looking after its customers, and that it was a “nice surprise” to be named as a finalist.
“It tells us ‘you’re doing something right’,” he said.
The providore has been open since June 2015 and employs 10 staff.
It is the only greengrocer from regional NSW in the running for the awards, with all others coming from Sydney or the ACT.
Florists, wholesalers, produce growers, flower growers and bloggers will also be recognised at the awards.
Sydney Markets Fresh Awards manager Sue Dodd said the finalists have demonstrated an incredible commitment to both quality and service.
“These small businesses are at the heart of our local communities,” Ms Dodd said.
“They continue to thrive by providing their customers with the finest quality produce, excellent service, a personal touch and a high level of expertise.
“Cessnock is extremely fortunate to be home to one of the finest green grocers in NSW and the ACT.”
The Sydney Markets Fresh Awards winners will be announced at The Star, Sydney on July 25.
