Temperatures dropped well below zero degrees in parts of the Hunter on Sunday morning as the middle of winter hits the region hard.

Cessnock got down to an icy -4.9 degrees, just 1.8 degrees off the coldest temperature ever recorded by the Bureau of Meteorology in the area.
Meanwhile Maitland reached a chilly -1.6 degrees – the first sub-zero night recorded in more than a year.
Tocal also dipped below zero degrees for the first time in 2018, recording 0.9 degrees on Sunday morning.
Nobbys and Williamtown in Newcastle also recorded their coldest nights of the year, with the mercury dipping to 4.7 degrees and 0.7 degrees respectively.
Luke Potts sent in some photos from Vacy, where the frost showed proof of the low overnight temperature.
The weather is expected to remain cool around the Hunter on Sunday and Monday before a warmer Tuesday – with tops of 21 degrees predicted for Maitland, Cessnock and Newcastle.
