Firefighters were called out to the Old Maitland Road waste management centre just after 7.30am to reports of a blaze.
Crews arrived to find a fire in a pile of scrap metal. The pile was identified as potentially containing asbestos, meaning the fire was treated as a hazardous matter.
Ten Fire and Rescue crews and nine Rural Fire Service teams battled to contain the blaze. Several bulk water tankers were used as there was no reticulated water at the site.
Cessnock Council machinery was then used to pull the material apart.
The cause of the blaze is undetermined but will be investigated.
