The 53-year-old from Cessnock has recently achieved her sporting dream, with selection in the Australian team for the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi.
Special Olympics provides sporting opportunities for athletes with intellectual disability, with national and world games held every four years.
Marks won two silver and one bronze medal at her first Special Olympics National Games in Adelaide in April.
She backed up her good form with a gold and bronze at the National Disability Championships, also held in Adelaide, in June – and shortly after that received the exciting news that she had been picked for the Special Olympics World Games.
Cessnock swimmer Joseph Smith, 18, was also selected for the Australian team, but decided to forgo his position as he has not been training.
Smith won one gold and three bronze medals at the Special Olympics National Games in April, but has retired from competitive swimming to focus on his university studies.
Team Australia will be represented by 105 athletes and 35 officials across 11 sports in Abu Dhabi in March.
