Ten-year-old Braith White, from Weston Public School took home top honours in the 100-metre final after running 13.49 seconds, breaking the record which mum Madeleine Walsh said was set in 2013.
The win means Braith will now head to Sydney Olympic Park at the end of October to try his luck at a state title.
“He first started running in 2016 – he wasn’t training or anything – he went to school zone regional and state and he won every level in the 100 meters,” Ms Walsh said.
“He took out the NSW title that year. he did the same thing last year, won everything until he got to state and he placed second.”
Given that he is now in the Under-10 division, Braith is now eligible for a shot at nationals at the end of November and will also be looking to reclaim a state title.
While mum said she was quietly confident that Braith would place in the top four at state, which would make him eligible for nationals, Braith was even more forrthcoming in his certainty.
“I’m going to get it again,” he said.
Ms Walsh added that Braith had long displayed a confidence beyond his years.
“We were at state when he was eight, when we were walking down the tunnel – because it’s a much different atmosphere, very full on, – I said to him ‘how do you feel?,” she said
“He said: ‘I’ve come here to do one job, and I’m going to win.,’ and he did.”
