Tucked away in the children’s reading area of Kurri Kurri Library, sits a beguiling mural, painted on one of the pillars that features an array of Australian native animals.
Now as the library’s renovations continue, one concerned patron is worried that the mural might be lost forever.
John Green, who attends a knitting and craft group at the library said that while it would be a shame to lose the mural, now was the perfect time for people to come in and see it before it is potentially painted over.
“I just want to make people aware that it’s here and hopefully stop any destruction of it,” Mr Green said. “It’s something in the library that is probably part secret because not many people know.”
He added that the mural could be a gateway for new patrons who may stop by to see the art and stay for all of the great services and programs the library offers.
Cessnock Council said that a final decision had yet to be made and invited customers to voice their opinions.
“Council is creating a space that’s welcoming, innovative and inspiring, and can be enjoyed by all library users,” a council spokesperson said. “The library is yet to decide on the finishing touches but enjoys hearing feedback from their loyal library customers.
The current renovations have included a new customer service desk, fresh paint, new carpet, the creation of a separate reading area as well as new furniture and computer desks.
