The first person to fly solo from England to Australia, Bert landed in the middle of Cessnock Racecourse in June 1928 as part of his ‘Tour of Triumph’ around Australia and received what is known today as a “rock star’s welcome.”
Now, Cessnock Library is inviting residents to relive some of the stories of Bert’s visit next week, with Local Studies Librarian Kimberley O’Sullivan unearthing some truly fascinating tidbits.
The celebration of our incredible flying stories not only looks at Bert Hinkler’s iconic visit, but also the day that Cessnock Airport opened, back in August 1935.
It was an event that the Newcastle Morning Herald described at the time as: “one of the most spectacular sin the history of the district.”
The following year, the grand Cessnock Air Pageant was held, with the organiser making sure everyone knew it was on flying over Cessnock dropping event leaflets into the town below.
Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent said this upcoming event was fitting given that the airport will be hosting the inaugural AirVenture Australia Airshow – 81 years since the first Cessnock Air Pageant.
“We extend a warm welcome to locals and those visiting to attend this free event that will interest aviation lovers and history enthusiasts,” he said.
Kelman Wines will also be providing a wine tasting on the night.
The talk will be on at Cessnock Library on Thursday 20 September from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. Bookings are essential. Phone the library on 4993 4399 to secure your spot.
