The senior winemaker at Iris Capital’s Dalwood Estate, Sweetwater and Hungerford Hill recently took out Best Shiraz that the 2018 Australian Single Vineyard Wine Show for Hungerford Hill’s 2017 Epic Hunter Valley Shiraz, as well as recently being nominated for an Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology (ASVO) Winemaker of the Year award.
To keep the plaudits going, Mr Currie, last weekend, took home a swag of awards at the Riverina Wine Show.
Hosted by the Riverina Winemaker’s Association, the show encompassed a series of awards at a single gala event, including the Tumbarumba Wine Show, Australian Italian Varieties and the Australian Sweet Wine Challenge.
For his part, Mr Currie wowed the judges with the fruits of his labours, taking home three gold, two silver and three bronze medals
One of those wins – an Australian Italian Varieties Gold Medal for Hungerford Hill’s 2017 Fiano – has special resonance.
In 2006, Mr Currie worked directly with the same grape variety in Southern Italy, during his time living in one of the country’s most famous wine-growing regions in the hills above Naples.
Winning the Australian Italian Varieties Wine gold medal for the Hungerford Hill 2017 Fiano was a great moment for me,” Mr Currie said. “I know the grape well so it’s like I’ve come full circle with the variety,”
Mr Currie added that he was pleased that such varieties were gaining traction in Australia.
“It is great to finally see the potential of this grape in Australia - I think it will be very well received,”: he said. “Firstly, it’s easy to pronounce, even easier to drink and a real fresh, aromatic flavour that suits our climate.”
Bryan also took out gold medals for Hungerford Hill’s 2016 Chardonnay and 2015 Hesperia Vineyard Chardonnay.
He was awarded a silver in the Australian Sweet Wine Challenge for Hungerford Hill 2016 Botrytis Semillon and the vineyard also took home silver in the Tumbrarumba Wine Show for the 2017 Hesperia Vineyard Pinot Noir
Hungerford Hill and Mr Currie added four bronze medals to their haul with their 2017 50th Anniversary Chardonnay, 2015 Chardonnay, 2017 Pinot Gris and 2017 Pinot Noir at the Tumbarumba Wine Show
