For those who aren’t familiar with this project it is focused on developing a site that covers 385 hectares of land to the eastern side of Cessnock. This area has previously been a hot spot for criminal activity, illegal dumping and other antisocial behaviour. The project is a collaborative effort between council, Cessnock police and Crown lands with the support of a number of local organisations. The group collectively put forward the project to serve as a strategy to divert youth crime and improve the well-being of residents.
The precinct could become home to an extensive network of mountain bike trails, cross-country running clubs, orienteering for local schools, native regeneration groups, Aboriginal history talks and trails, along with so much more. This application is a wonderful example of different organisations working together towards a common goal. It will benefit our entire community and also visitors to our community.
Council submitted an application for $4 million under the NSW Government’s Regional Communities Development Fund.
Bridges Hill park on track
Last week I took the opportunity to visit the Bridges Hill Park Playground and Access Improvement project.
The project is certainly tracking well with the pouring of concrete for the children’s bicycle track underway. Work will soon progress to the second stage, which involves construction of the regional playground, a recreational space that will be highly utilised by our youngest residents.
The space is being transformed, not only to provide residents with increased recreational activities but to improve access for all residents. The plans also include the installation of three fitness stations, barbecue facilities, an enclosed toddler’s play area, yarning circle and sensory bush tucker garden.
The project recently received a significant funding injection, attracting $936,315 under Round Two of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund. To keep up to date visit www.cessnock.nsw.gov.au/bridgeshillproject.
Sacrifice remembered
Last Thursday the Kurri Kurri RSL Sub-branch presented council with 16 banners that will be displayed in Kurri Kurri to mark the centenary of Armistice.
Congratulations to the sub-branch who put together the application to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Council was also successful in receiving grant funding under the Department of Veterans Affairs Armistice Centenary Grants Program. Banners will now be displayed in Weston, Greta, Cessnock and Kurri Kurri that mark Remembrance Day.
These banners will act as a reminder to everyone in our community of the importance of this commemorative occasion.
