The town’s 61st mural, titled Remembering the Smelter, is a commemoration of life and work at the aluminium smelter that permanently closed in 2014.
Painted by artist Daniel Joyce, the town entry mural is situated on Hart Road, Loxford and was commissioned by Hydro Aluminium following the closure of the smelter which operated from 1969 to 2012.
The project was coordinated by Towns With Heart and the idea and design of the mural was decided by committee.
It was unveiled on Monday by former smelter employee and Regrowth Kurri Kurri Community Reference Group member Bill Metcalfe
Towns With Heart president Toby Thomas said Mr Joyce was a great choice to paint the mural.
“Earlier this year, Daniel completed a mural that cerebrated the late Ian ‘Beat’ Hill and we’ve, once again, been impressed with the quality of this latest work.
Hydro Aluminium Kurri Kurri Managing Director Richard Brown said the project would not have been possible without community involvement.
“This was always intended to be a community project, that commemorates the history of the smelter,” he said. “I’m delighted that Hydro Aluminium has been able to contribute to the vibrant landscape of murals that set Kurri Kurri apart.”
The completion of the artwork takes the total number of murals in the area to 61, bolstering its reputation as the “mural town”.
