Representatives from the not-for-profit organisation that raises money for cancer, research rode into the school on Monday to talk to the students about its Be Fit, Be Fun Be Happy cancer awareness campaign.
As part of the visit, Tour de Cure presented the school with a cheque for $2500 courtesy of sponsors Commonwealth Bank.
“We’ were extremely surprised and very thrilled to be given the honour,” Mulbring Public School principal Donna Lennard said.
Ms Lennard added that the school will be using the welcome funds to refit its fixed equipment play area with special soft-fill surfacing as well as re-establishing the school vegetable garden with nice, fresh veggies to be used in cooking classes.
She added that money left over would go towards maintaining the school’s orchard.
“The brief of the visit was be fit, be happy, be healthy and I think both of these projects live up to that brief,” Ms Lennard said.
In a reciprocal effort, the school also asked for a gold going donation on the day, making a wheel of coins to give to the Tour de Cure team.
Ms Lennard said that the students took to the drive with gusto, quick filling the wheel with $78 before a parent came in at the last minute with $2 to round it up to an even $80
“I think the Tour De cure guys were quite surprised that we went to the effort,” Ms Lennard said. “They were very grateful.”
The students also reviewed a showbag as a memento of the occasion, filled with useful information about how they can stay fit, healthy and happy.
Tour de Cure hosts a range of inspirational cycling tours and events throughout the country in an effort to raise money for cancer research.
Since its inception in 2007, the organisation has helped fund 306 cancer projects as well as raising awareness about cancer prevention to more than 100,000 students nationally through the Be Fit, Be Healthy, Be Happy campaign.
