This year, the charity is anticipating an increased demand for assistance during the Christmas period and are relying, even more, on the generosity of the Cessnock community to provide gifts, especially for the children.

Attending the official launch last week, Member for Hunter Joel Fitzgibbon praised the work the Samaritans do in the community.

“The Samaritans Toy Appeal and the service this organisation provides to those in need in our community all year round is truly invaluable,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

“I am proud to get behind the charity and ask those who are able to, to give generously and help to spread the word.”

The charity is on the lookout for toys for children up to 10 years of age with donations of gift cards being accepted for children aged 11-12.

A wide range of gifts are required such as toys, sports equipment, beach towels, bags and books for children aged 0 - 9. Samaritans asks that donated items do not require batteries for use.

Donations of toys or gift cards can be made directly to the Samaritans Cessnock Office at 198-202 Vincent Street during opening hours.

“The generosity of the toy donations will help us to bring smiles to many faces on Christmas Day,” Senior Support Worker at Samaritans Information and Neighborhood Centre Denise Crossley said.

Local families in need of toys at Christmas must have visited the crisis service (Emergency Relief) at some point in 2018.

All toy and gift card donations will be accepted before Tuesday, 11 December.
