Mouth-watering mangoes will be back at the Slow Food Earth Market in The Levee on Thursday – exactly one year since the city rescued its first crop.

Back then farmers Helen and Bruce Hill had a massive amount of fruit at their Ayr property in north Queensland and it would have gone to waste if the city hadn’t stepped in.

This time the crop is much smaller, but there is still an oversupply within their local markets. 

The Hill’s called Slow Food Hunter Valley leader Amorelle Dempster who jumped at the chance to bring them to Maitland.

It took seven people five hours to pick the one-tonne crop, which is equivalent to about 1500 mangoes.

Ninety-six boxes left the farm on Tuesday and will arrive just in time for the 12.30 market on November 15.

Slow Food Hunter Valley co-leader Helen Hughes, who posed with a juicy mango for the Mercury last year, cannot wait to taste the yellow goodness.

“They are absolutely delicious and you can do so much with them,” she said. 

“It’s great we are able to rescue this fruit, and even though it is doing these farmers a favour it is also a huge win for Maitland people.

“The aroma when you open it is such a beautiful smell, I was in the supermarket the other day and put one to my nose and there was no smell.

“These mangoes are biodynamic and organic and chemical free too so we will be getting a good product with great nutrition.”

Ms Hughes will take a few mangoes into the market kitchen and show shoppers how to make a green mango salad via Facebook livestream at 1.30pm on Thursday. 

“Last year we made smoothies, but there are so many other things you can do with them – you can use them when they are green too,” she said. 

“The salad will have lots of lovely Asian herbs and a touch of chilli and garlic. Hopefully that will give people a few ideas about how they can use them.”

The mangoes be sold for $2 each or 6 for $10 from 12.30pm.
