The Mercury, and it’s sister Fairfax Media mastheads, have partnered with charity Rural Aid to support the Christmas Cards 4 Farmers drive.
We are calling on children to make a Christmas card with their own design and write a special message inside for a farmer.
Schools, preschools and childcare centres are encouraged to take part, as well as individual families.
The cards cannot be larger than 12cm x 17cm and must be mailed to Rural Aid no later than Monday, December 10, 2018.
Rural Aid will then put the card in an envelope and send it an Aussie farmer to help put a smile on their face during the festive season.
Mercury journalist Belinda-Jane Davis, who has been covering the drought this year, urged children to take part.
She said adults could even participate if they wanted to use the card-making activity as a way of showing their support for farmers.
“Designing a card and putting a special message inside it can make a massive difference, and it’s also a fun Christmas activity,” she said.
“Children could make the card at their school or childcare centre, or even at home.
The card will surely put a smile on the farmer’s face and let them know that they are cared for and respected for the role they play in our food production and also in our economy.
Rural Aid CEO Charles Alder said Australia Post would deliver the cards and collect them from the charity’s Queensland headquarters.
That way all of the cards will reach the farmer before Christmas.
“Rural Aid is excited to help bring some Christmas cheer to our farmers doing it tough this year across Australia,” he said.
Our kids have such amazing hearts and we though with just a few weeks to go our kids might want to show their appreciation to our farmers and what better than by sending a personalised Christmas card. So come on kids, let’s do it.

Here’s the finer details:
- Make a card with your on words and design. NOTE: The cards cannot be larger than 12cm x 17cm. You could fold a bigger card down to that size but this is the MAXIMUM size that will be sent out.
- Put all of the cards in one big envelope and mail or courier them to Rural Aid. The charity will put your card in an envelope and address it to a farmer.
