The son of Kinloch Brae and Cop A Sling was the fastest of three heat winners and with six consecutive wins and a perfect record in the red rug he’s certain to have plenty of supporters.
Punters sent the red brindle dog to the boxes as the $1.20 red hot favourite in the second of three 450 metre heats last Thursday and he made good use of box eight to sweep around the field and lead most of the way in a best-of-day 24.95 seconds.
Cop A Chevy has good early speed and has now won 11 of his 17 starts for nearly $14,000 in prizmoney and, interestingly, four of his past six wins have been in best-of-day figures.
Cop A Chevy looked all over a winner as he rounded the home corner is his heat to beat the Alan Proctor-trained Mighty Hazza (25.25s) by four and a quarter lengths, with They Know Who (25.44s) third home for Ray Walters.
Manuel will have two runners in Thursday's final after Swizzle Sticka won the first heat in 25.30s, beating the Stephen Davies-trained Supreme Style (25.40s) while Belle's Chorus (25.46s) was third home for Ron Bell.
Harrington trainer Steve Burgis puts in a lot of hours on the road trialling and racing his dogs at Maitland and it was nice to see him secure a spot in the final with Power To Wyn claiming the third heat in 25.43s. Cruze King (25.64s) was next home for Michael Eberand with Lagoon Bonnie (25.90s) third for Stephen Keith.
The box draw for the final is: 1 Cop A Chevy, 2 Power To Wyn, 3 Mighty Hazza, 4 Cruze King, 5 Supreme Style, 6 Belle’s Chorus, 7 They Know Who, 8 Swizzle Sticka, 9 Lagoon Bonnie (1st reserve), 10 Glengarrie Lady (2nd reserve).
A big thank you to Maitland GBOTA Branch members for sponsoring this annual race.
