This year, residents can enjoy three days of free activities, kicking off on Friday, January 25 with a screening of the iconic Aussie comedy, The Castle, at the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre from 6.30pm.
The beloved Australian classic, that tells the David and Goliath story of little Aussie battlers the Kerrigans as they take on heartless big city developers in an effort to save their own piece of serenity, is the perfect way to get into the patriotic spirit.
On January 26, East Cessnock Bowling Club will play host to the official Citizenship Ceremony and Australia Day Awards from 10am to 12pm.
2017 saw 14 new citizens inducted at Cessnock, joining 13,000 that were naturalised at 330 ceremonies across Australia.
Following the official proceedings, it will be time for a spot of cricket with the Mayoral Cup that will see the Cessnock District Cricket Association rep team face off against the Mayor’s Eleven at East End Oval.
The day on the pitch will also see the Cessnock District Cricket Association’s Twenty20 finals take place.
Make sure to bring a hat, some zinc and your best cheering voice.
If that wasn’t enough, Sunday, January 27 will be a day for cooling down thanks to free entry to Cessnock pool from 9am.
Residents will be able to cool off with a swim and enjoy a bite to eat at the free barbecue breakfast.
Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent said he was looking forward to this year’s expanded Australia Day program.
“We are excited to be running this year’s celebration that has been extended to three days of fun,” Cr Pynsent said.
“What a fantastic few days we have planned to celebrate this great country we live in.”
Revellers are also encouraged to share their Australia Day moments by tagging photos on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtags #AustraliaDay and #Cessnock.
