The award-winning play, written by David Stevens, went on to become a 1994 film starring Jack Thompson, John Polson and launched the career of a then relatively unknown actor Russell Crowe.
The story centres on the relationship between single dad Harry and his gay son Jeff as they both struggle to find love.
As Jeff forms a relationship with Greg, who has kept his own sexuality a secret from his strict parents, Harry falls for conservative divorcee Joyce.
Harry wants to marry Joyce, but is unsure that his son’s sexuality will sit well with his new flame.
Director Annette Rowlison said that while the play deals with how Jeff and Greg’s sexuality impact others in their lives, the overarching themes are more universal.
“Obviously everyone grabs on to the theme of the homosexual son with the single father but in actual fact, the main themes of the play are about hope and the Aussie battler that just keeps going,” she said.
“I think that’s something that audiences have really identified with. They want these characters to end up with the happiness they are looking for.”
Annette added that the subject matter was dealt with in a uniquely Australian way.
“There is a lot of comedy in the play – it’s that really Aussie thing of using humour to get through tough times. It’s hilarious,” she said.
The production features a stellar ensemble cast of local actors including Alan Glover (Harry), Roderick Sinnamon (Jeff), Benjamin Louttit (Greg) and Robyn Blackwell (Joyce).
“I am just so pleased with the cast – Alan and Rod as father and son just work beautifully together. The chemistry is definitely there between them,” Annette said.
The two boys, Rod and Benjamin, have been amazing as well – the chemistry between them is just fantastic and they have all had it from the beginning. I’ve been very fortunate.”
The Sum of Us will be on at the Royal Exchange (34 Bolton St, Newcastle) From Friday 1 February to Saturday 9 February. Visit www.trybooking.com.au/ZTNY for tickets.
