The Broken Hill pair won the 2019 Gary Treloar Speedway Sidecar Cup No.3 from a quality field that included 10 times Australian Speedway Sidecar Champion Darrin Treloar.
The long term pair scored three wins and two second places in their five qualifying rides and went into the A Final at the top of the leader board.
Howes was joined in the A Final Cup Decider by New Zealand star Andrew Buchanan and his local passenger Blake Cox as well as Queensland’s Sam Harrison and Luke McGrath and fellow
Queenslander Hamish Golding and his local passenger Liam Cox.
A spectacular, high speed crash involving Andrew Buchanan and Blake Cox in the opening laps caused the race to be halted.
The pair became unbalanced as they powered into the home straight and the sidecar rolled heavily, tossing Cox to the track and the body of the sidecar landing heavily across Buchanan’s back, trapping him underneath.
Both Buchanan and Cox were treated by paramedics on the track, with both eventually regaining their feet and walking onto the infield.
Golding’s passenger, Liam Cox took a tumble in the mayhem and also required medical attention but was able to gather himself together to take his place in the rerun.
Howes made the best of the restart and was able to thwart the challenge of Golding and Harrison.
“I have finished in the places at the previous two GT Cup events so it’s great to win this one tonight,” said Howes at the trophy presentation.
“It’s a special event for us and we don’t think twice when Darrin invites us to race.”
It was a night to forget for Darrin Treloar and his passenger Jesse Headland.
The pair completely missed their opening race due to bike problems.
Adding to his woes, Treloar was forced on to the infield during his second event and again failed score any qualifying points.
Some consolation came when he won his last qualifying race but he failed to make the finals.
Young competitor Isaac Mitchell was taken to hospital for observation when he and his rider Jake Treloar collided heavily with infield equipment at the start/finish line during the A Final of the Gary Treloar Junior Invitational.
Kurri hosts the 2019 NSW Senior and NSW Junior Speedway Sidecar Championships on February 9.
