The city finished in sixth spot on the 2019 Traveler's Choice Destinations list, behind the likes of Sydney, the Gold Coast, Melbourne, Brisbane and Hobart.
Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, attractions and restaurants in destinations worldwide gathered over a 12-month period, as well as traveller booking interest on TripAdvisor.
On the list, TripAdvisor said: "Cessnock's wine region is one of the oldest and most diverse in the world, making it a terrific destination for oenophiles".
"There are over 100 wineries in the area, and vineyard and cellar tours are among Cessnock's most popular attractions.
"World-class golf courses, gourmet eateries, lush gardens and blissful spas round out the local appeal."
While wine is a big contributor to the city's appearance on the list, Cessnock is the only major wine region in Australia to make the top 10.
Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent said this recognition was an opportunity for local businesses and reflected the unique experience we offer visitors as a destination.
"It's no surprise we've been named," he said. "It's a reflection of the hard work and passion our local businesses have when it comes to their customers. As a community we are keen to share what makes Cessnock so special."
A TripAdvisor spokesperson said two stand-out Hunter Valley businesses that contributed to the result were 2019 Travellers' Choice for Hotels winner, Spicers Vineyard Estate, which travellers loved for its high quality service and beautiful setting and 2018 Travellers' Choice for Restaurants winner, Muse, as a go-to for its fresh and exciting menu that utilises locally sourced ingredients.
The spokesperson said Cessnock was a fantastic base to explore the region's world-class wineries and cellar doors.
"It's also a popular destination for a weekend escape from neighbouring metropolitan hubs such as Sydney and Newcastle," the spokesperson said.
