And it's all thanks to the efforts of community groups, such as the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Cessnock Volunteer Support Group, that recipients never have to pay a dollar to receive the lifesaving service.
This year, the local volunteer support group is hosting a fundraising week at Cessnock Golf Club from May 7 to 11.
Club captain Peter Conroy said the fundraising week would provide vital funds for the non-profit lifesaving service.
"We have our annual Westpac charity day, which we've turned into a week. We have our golf events all week," he said.
"We will have auctions and raffles at the dinner to raise money for the Westpac helicopter. We have some great guests."
The sit down dinner will be held on May 8, with special guests former Penrith Panthers player Royce Simmons as the speaker as well as Bruce Starkey, Steve Edge and Craig Young.
"It's a service that needs the community, and it's a service that saves the community's lives," support group member Ken Springbett said.
The Cessnock Volunteer Support Group has raised more than $900,000 in just over two decades for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. For more information about booking your place at the dinner or signing up as a player, call Cessnock Golf Club on 4990 1633.
